The Waterview Tunnel in Auckland - Career Highlights from Michael Cutfield

In Part Three of this new series, Michael Cutfield talks about the project that stands out as his ‘Career Highlight’ so far; the Waterview Tunnel. When the Waterview Connection opened in 2017 it was touted as the biggest change to Auckland's roading network since the opening of the Harbour Bridge in 1959. The Waterview Tunnel project was the biggest roading job in the country at a value of $1.4b.

Under Fletcher Construction, Mike was the Survey Manager for the Wellconnected Alliance and managed up to 13 surveyors on the surface works around Alice the TBM. Hear from Mike first-hand, as he talks about the many high level survey challenges on a project this size including Real Time Survey Monitoring, Laser Scanning, Aerial Surveys,the everyday setout and as-built of the major infrastructure.

Mike is an experienced Survey Manager, currently the General Manager of SurveyWorx, with a demonstrated history of working in the construction industry. He is the Stream Lead for S+SNZ Engineering Surveying and has played a pivotal role in the recent Survey and Spatial New Zealand Certification Pilot Program for Engineering Surveying, both as an Assessor and being the first to become a Certified Professional Engineering Surveyor.
