Our History

The New Zealand Institute of Surveyors Incorporated or NZIS is our legal name and we use Survey and Spatial New Zealand as our trading name. NZIS was founded in 1888 and since this time, its members have enjoyed a long and established place in New Zealand history. The original entity, was incorporated at the time by the ‘Institute of Surveyors and Board of Examiners Act 1900’ which at the same time constituted ‘The Surveyors Board’. The Act was re-enacted as ‘The Surveyors Institute and Board of Examiner’s Act 1908’.
From 1928 onwards, there were several legislative enactments affecting the sector.

In 2013, Survey and Spatial New Zealand (S+SNZ) was introduced as the trading name. The membership base was expanded to provide a professional home of choice for all spatial science practitioners.

Currently S+SNZ has 15 regional branches supported by a National Office based in Wellington. Membership is guided by an elected President and Council with an operational Board

We proudly support excellence within our community with services to members including continuing education, best professional practice guidelines and resources, research and development, advocacy, policy services, business support, advice, and awarding excellence within the profession.

S+SNZ represents the national interests of professionals by offering the sector a higher status Certification and qualification.
